An upbringing in the Suffolk countryside kindle my interest in, and
awareness of, the natural environment and animals. Many things inspire my
work; qualities and colour in nature; certain poems and folklore; historical
ceramics such as Staffordshire flat back figures and old textiles and samplers.
In particular the time taken and attention to detail in some historical pieces
of art work.
The work is not
intended to be sentimental but rather to reflect the characteristics of certain
animals and to record specific moments.

The ceramics are
constructed from slabs pieced together, loosely formed over a wooden armature. This method gives me some freedom to create movement and delicacy.
Printmaking is a
significant part of my work, drypoint printing in particular; working on copper
or perspex plates, scribing into the plates and making a variety of lines and
marks. Then printing virtually immediately. The nature of the process means
that you get a limited edition of prints from each plate, each being
individually inked and printed and therefore, unique. I am interested in detail
and surface qualities hence taking pieces one or two steps further by collaging,
stitching, or dipping them in bee's wax. |
